These wonderful students completed their mission on Thursday, December by shopping for these items. They were so excited to know that they will hopefully be putting a smile on a man, woman, or child's face and helping them to stay warm this winter. From counting (and counting, and counting) the money collected to tying the homemade Christmas tags on each item, so much love and care was put into this project. We hope you all have the most blessed and happiest of Christmases.
To say that I am proud of the 5th and 6th graders is a tremendous understatement. This Fall the 6th graders served a mean at St. Patrick's in Dubuque. From this after-school opportunity, their eyes were opened and they were humbled by the experience. This experience sparked an amazing idea The 5th and 6th graders asked if there was a way to give back to those individuals. I took a step back as I listened to the most amazing conversation unfold. As the student council, before Thanksgiving, they headed a project to collect money so they could purchase hats and gloves for the men, women, and children who eat as a family at this parish each week. Upon counting the generous donations that were given, the total far surpassed their goal with $238.30. Each year, the 6th grade class works together to create a float that represents Hennessy. They used time outside of school and did such an amazing job! The 4th, 5th, and 6th grade student spent a day at Four Mounds where they focused on team building skills. During Hot Lunch Week, the 5th and 6th graders were given the opportunity to bake cookies with our very own baking expert, Olga. The students chose the recipe for M&M cookies and Olga led the way while the students did the rest. As you can see from the pictures, it was a successful experience! The Halloween celebration was a success with creative costumes and tasty treats! Our party was complete with spooky music and a dance party!! We are off and running in the 5th and 6th grade classroom! We've been busy working on our studies and also planning activities for our special weeks in October. Sitting with our first grade buddies is also something we look forward to each Wednesday.😀
The students have officially received their first assignment of the year! The assignment includes reading the Classroom Guidelines/Rules and Academic/Behavioral Expectations with their parents. These can be found by hovering the "Student Page" tab and clicking on each. We did read through them as a class, but by reading them with you, you will also know what is expected of them this school year. Once you have read through and discussed the Classroom Guidelines/Rules and Academic/Behavioral Expectations with your child, please send me a quick email stating that you understand them. My contact information can be found by clicking on the "Home" tab. I ask that this be completed by Friday, September 4th.
In an effort to eliminate the shuffle of papers, I am attempting to be more "green" with teacher/parent communication. I'm hoping that by the use of this website, email, and telephone there will be fewer notes and papers! Here are some "helpful tips" to assist you with navigating through the 5th and 6th grade webpage:
"Home Page": When you type in our classroom web address, you will first see the "Home Page." This is where you will find my contact information in the event you would need to contact me throughout the year. "Parent Page" blog: This is where I will be posting the updates throughout the year. These updates will always include typed updates, but on occasion will also include some pictures. If you happen to miss a past update, there's no need to worry because it will still be on this page! Instead of disappearing into cyber-space, our updates will move further down the screen as we continue to add more. You are also more than welcome to comment directly to the posting if you have questions or comments regarding that particular post. If you feel more comfortable emailing me the question or comment, you are more than welcome to do so. "Student Page": Our classroom rules/guidelines, expectations, book suggestions and reviews, and websites relevant to student learning (any other materials that will be helpful to the students will be posted here as well). "Teaching Philosophy": This is where I state my beliefs of education. My philosophy should give you a clearer picture as to how my teaching style has transformed. Welcome parents! It is important that you and I always keep an open line of communication. By doing so, we can work together to create the best possible learning experience for your child. The purpose of the 5th and 6th grade web page is for me to provide updates of what we are doing in our classroom throughout the year. These updates will serve as "glimpses" into our school days where you can both see (through pictures) and learn (through written updates on our web page) about what we are up to. You are always more than welcome to contact me by emailing or calling me at school as well. That information is provided in our "home page" tab.
